Practice Highlights
- Conducts bedside interviews with self-pay patients and family members to screen for eligibility across governmental programs (Medicaid, Medicare, county assistance) and non-governmental financial assistance options
- Identifies all potential payer sources including auto insurance, Workers' Compensation, commercial insurance, private insurance, and third-party liability (TPL) to ensure accurate account routing in the patient accounting environment
- Obtains and completes Confidential Financial Statement forms; guides patients through the application process for any programs for which they qualify
- Performs financial clearance functions including collections; prepares accounts for Financial Assistance review when patient cooperation is not obtained or program eligibility does not exist
- Follows up on EES-assigned accounts to confirm government applications are processed through to eligibility determination
- Conducts field visits to patient homes for skip tracing and document assistance
- Communicates case screening determinations and outcomes to hospital case management, social services, and admissions staff via verbal and written channels
- Maintains complete, accurate documentation of all account activity both during the inpatient stay and throughout the patient accounting cycle
- Works across multiple facilities and hospital platforms simultaneously, coordinating with multiple supervisors and departments
- Work environment spans both hospital floors (including the Emergency Department) and office settings, with regular patient bedside presence and some travel required
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum 2 years of work experience in social services, hospital admitting, or a directly related field
- Working familiarity with Federal, State, and County program rules and regulations governing patient financial assistance
- Proficiency in PC systems including Windows, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to clearly convey complex benefit and financial information to patients and families
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize competing tasks, and manage multiple accounts with efficiency and attention to detail
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred
- Must be able to navigate a hospital campus environment, including broad campus settings and the Emergency Department, and visit patients at bedside; some travel required
