Job Description Summary:

The role you’ll contribute:

"The Physician Assistant (PA) supports the clinical operation of AdventHealth with primary focus on clinical services in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Inpatient Responsibilities include: pre-operative admission, consultation, evaluation and medical optimization; intra-operative 1st and 2nd assistance; post-operative ICU and floor patient care and discharge. Outpatient Responsibilities include: pre & post Operative clinic; out-of-hospital patient clinical phone call management & out-of-hospital operative call-in. Delivery of patient care will be conducted in collaboration with faculty surgeons and physicians.

Basic PA function includes, but is not limited to: conduct of relevant health & medical history; performance of physical examination; collection, interpretation & recording of clinical data; ordering/specimen collection for/interpretation of all relevant laboratory/microbiological tests; ordering/interpretation of all relevant radiologic/US/MRI/NM studies; ordering/performance of/interpretation of cardiac diagnostic testing; Development of treatment plans, ordering medications; address the pharmacologic needs of patients by CPOE/written/oral methods; dispense & administration of medications; activity level designation; performance of rounds and recording of computerized progress/consult/procedure notes; participation in clinical & multidisciplinary rounds; admission of patients at the direction of the supervising physician; obtainment of informed consent for procedures performed by the physician assistant; consultation/referral to other health professionals & community agencies; provide relevant patient education and counseling regarding heath status, test results, disease process and discharge planning; perform any other clinical responsibility within the physician assistant's level of training and scope of practice; assist the collaborating physician in any intervention in the interest of patient care/safety.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform First/Second Surgical Assist duties within the OR setting and/or at bedside as program and surgeon direct which may include but is not limited to:

  • First & 2nd Operative assistant on cardiothoracic surgical and transplant patients
  • Assist with Heart Transplantation, Lung Transplantation & Ventricular Assist Device surgeries
  • Assist with Cardiothoracic Surgery including CABG, Valve Repair and Replacement, Aortic Procedures, Thoracotomy, Lung Resections, and Central/Peripheral Vascular repair.
  • Conduit Harvest, including greater and lesser saphenous veins and radial artery o Sternotomy & Sternal closure o
  • ECMO initiation/weaning and cannulation/decannulation techniques
  • Obtainment of informed consent for procedures performed by the PA
  • Insertion of percutaneous/open chest tubes, arterial lines & femoral/axillary IABP, Fem/SC/IJ Central venous access, PA catheter placement, transvenous pacer wires, and dialysis catheters
  • Documenting, coding and completing diagnosis of patient's condition to facilitate appropriate insurance reimbursement.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Risk Management: understand method and reasoning for reporting incidents, completion of hospital incident report form, assists department manager or others in recognizing and reducing risk within the department and other areas of the hospital.
  • Service Management: Demonstrates courteous service, and ability to meet special needs or requests, performs duties and a timely manner and provides updates if a delay occurs, communicates with courtesy when interacting with internal and external patients, in person or by telephone. Respects patient’s privacy, confidentiality and dignity.
  • Understands and Complies with the Environment of Care/Infection Control Responsibilities.
  • Is Knowledgeable and Complies with the States Institutional Activities and Expectations.
  • Age Specific Standards.
  • Provides and Expedites Patient Care in Units and ICUs: performs H&P’s and dictates into chart, writes admitting/progress notes into patient chart, writes discharge summaries and orders as directed by supervising physician, initiates standing orders for patients both pre/post op, performs pre-operative visits and follow up exams, completes specific procedures under the direction of the physicians including, but not limited to removal of chest tubes an NG tubes and wound care, and provides system management of Surgical practice patients as per medical staff privilege delineation.
  • Provides Direct Patient Care in Floors and Units.
  • Assists physicians with coordination of clinical activities and orders.

The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Physician Assistant degree from an accredited school upon hire
  • 2 years of experience in specialty area upon hire

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

  • Current Licensure as a Physician Assistant upon hire.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • American Heart Association Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS)
