Practice Highlights
- Full patient registration at date of service, including demographic capture, insurance verification, benefits and eligibility confirmation, and authorization for both scheduled and unscheduled hospital services
- Responsible for securing and explaining all required legal and consent forms: Advance Directives, Conditions of Service, Consent for Treatment, Important Message from Medicare, and EMTALA documentation
- Performs medical necessity checks and verification in accordance with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) standards
- Executes compliant patient liability collection techniques before, during, and after the date of service; conducts hospital cash reconciliation and secured payment entry
- Assists with scheduling diagnostic procedures, including data entry into the scheduling system and providing patients with appointment instructions
- Coordinates post-discharge care planning and communicates inpatient visit notifications to payors
- Scans and manages Protected Health Information (PHI); creates and maintains patient information packets and folders for upcoming services
- Must be cross-trained and deployable in at least two Patient Access service areas, including the Emergency Department
- Interfaces directly with physician offices to resolve patient and billing issues; works in a high-volume environment that may include uncooperative or distressed patients
- Hospital administration setting with potential exposure to patient care areas, including life-threatening patient conditions
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; some college coursework preferred
- 0–1 year of customer service experience; 0–1 year of administrative experience in a medical facility, health insurance, or related field preferred
- Minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute
- Demonstrated working knowledge of PC, CRT terminal, and printer operation
- Ability to interpret physician orders, medical terminology, and insurance cards accurately
- Understanding of third-party payor requirements and healthcare compliance standards preferred
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to receive and convey detailed information clearly
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Must be available to work varying hours and days based on departmental and system demands
