- Lead Case Manager serves as the department's content expert and primary role model — the recognized authority on all case management functions across the unit
- Designated "Super User" for five core platforms: MIDAS, CERMe, Curaspan, Portal, and MS4
- Primary responsibility for onboarding and training new case management staff, plus ongoing education for all department staff when new initiatives are implemented
- Delivers initial and annual InterQual training to all RN Case Managers; required to hold InterQual Certified Instructor (IQCI) credentials with proficiency testing
- Utilization review scope covers admission, concurrent, and retrospective reviews across Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers — applying InterQual criteria and working DRG tracking in MIDAS
- Discharge planning authority spans the full continuum: admission-to-discharge assessment, interdisciplinary team collaboration, social services and palliative care referrals, post-acute placement, and patient/family education
- Observation status review required within 16 hours of admission; manages HINN, ABN, and Detailed Notice of Discharge (DND) processes for Medicare beneficiaries
- Collaborates directly with physicians, social workers, Physician Advisors, and the Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) on complex cases and appeals
- Supervises and delegates to LPNs, Case Management Coordinators, and other non-licensed personnel performing discharge planning activities
Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Arizona required
- Nursing degree from an accredited nursing school required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Minimum 3 years of acute care hospital experience, plus at least 2 years of recent acute care hospital case management, discharge planning, and utilization management experience
- Preferred: 3–5 years of acute care hospital case management, utilization management, and discharge planning experience, plus at least 1 year of hospital supervisory experience
- MIDAS, CuraSpan, and InterQual Certified Instructor (IQCI) training with proficiency testing required
- Demonstrated knowledge of ANA Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, Arizona Nurse Practice Act, Core Measures, and ACMA Case Management Standards of Practice
- Preferred certification: Certified Case Manager (CCM) or Accredited Case Manager (ACM)
- Public speaking and adult education experience preferred
