Palm Beach Health Network is recruiting Nurse Externs across six acute care hospital campuses in South Florida's Palm Beach County — an opportunity for nursing students to gain hands-on clinical experience in a large, multi-facility health system while completing their degree. This role is ideal for students who have finished their nursing fundamentals coursework and are ready to translate classroom learning into real patient care under RN supervision. The network spans communities from Delray Beach to West Boca Raton, offering broad exposure to diverse patient populations and clinical settings.

Perks and Benefits

  • Multi-campus network affiliation — candidates are considered across all six Palm Beach Health Network hospitals, maximizing placement flexibility
  • Cross-training opportunity in unit secretary and clerical functions, broadening skill development beyond direct patient care
  • Structured clinical validation process: nursing interventions are supervised and signed off by credentialed RN staff, ensuring a safe and supported learning environment
  • Access to organizational resources, tools, and professional development support consistent with a large health system
  • Career pathway development support within a system operating 65 hospitals and approximately 510 outpatient centers nationally

Practice Highlights

  • Six-hospital network encompassing: Delray Medical Center, Florida Coast Medical Center, Good Samaritan Medical Center, Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, St. Mary's Medical Center, and West Boca Medical Center
  • Direct patient care responsibilities include assistance with activities of daily living and delivery of basic patient care addressing physical, emotional, and social needs
  • Nursing practice interventions performed are limited to those learned within the extern's clinical training program and individually validated by an RN staff member on the unit
  • Optional cross-training to unit secretary duties, providing exposure to clinical workflow coordination and health system operations
  • Broad patient population across South Florida's Palm Beach County, including urban, suburban, and coastal communities
  • Large, established health system with differentiated medical specialists and tailored service lines across each campus

Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in an accredited School of Nursing program — active student status required throughout the externship
  • Successful completion of a nursing fundamentals course within the accredited nursing program is the minimum academic requirement
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
  • Prior clinical experience in a relevant area of patient care is preferred but not required

About the Community

Palm Beach County sits along Florida's southeastern Atlantic coast, offering year-round warm weather, world-class beaches, and a cost of living that remains accessible relative to other major Florida metros. The county encompasses a range of communities — from the cultural amenities and nightlife of West Palm Beach to the quieter, family-oriented suburbs of Boca Raton and Palm Beach Gardens — making it an attractive base for nursing students at any stage of life. Major universities and nursing programs are well-represented in the region, and the proximity to Miami and Fort Lauderdale adds further access to metropolitan resources, international airports, and diverse dining and entertainment.
