Baptist Health System in San Antonio, Texas is recruiting an experienced Histology Lab Manager to lead daily operations across its Histology Laboratory. This is a hands-on leadership role within a multi-hospital health system with more than 120 years of community presence, encompassing six full-service hospitals, a specialized children's hospital, a comprehensive cancer care network, imaging centers, and ambulatory services. The right candidate brings both bench-level histotechnology expertise and proven supervisory experience managing staff, budgets, regulatory compliance, and quality improvement programs.

Practice Highlights

  • Oversees all daily operations of the Histology Lab, including workflow management, staffing, and turnaround time (TAT) tracking on the AP workload system
  • Directly manages, coaches, and evaluates histotechnology staff and lab assistants; responsible for hiring, performance reviews, disciplinary actions, and competency development
  • Ensures full compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and all applicable local and federal regulatory standards
  • Maintains and enforces laboratory and surgical quality control policies; documents all QC activities and participates in Performance Improvement initiatives
  • Provides technical instruction and guidance in tissue processing, embedding, cutting, and staining; differentiates acceptable from unacceptable specimen preparation
  • Performs Histology bench work as needed to support timely completion of caseload
  • Manages department supply inventory, ordering, and budget oversight including annual operating and capital budget monitoring
  • Identifies and resolves problems affecting test performance or result reporting; ensures proper handling of all tissue samples and protocols
  • Operates within a large integrated health system that includes six full-service hospitals, a dedicated pediatric hospital with a pediatric emergency unit, a cancer care network, rehabilitation centers, imaging centers, and the Baptist School of Health Professions

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Histotechnology program accredited by CAHEA/NAACLS (required); Associate's Degree from an accredited college or program in a related science (preferred)
  • Histologic Technician (HT) certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent credential (required)
  • Minimum 2 years of managerial experience with fiscal, regulatory, and quality improvement responsibilities; 3 or more years preferred
  • Demonstrated competency in tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining techniques
  • Ability to ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and all applicable laboratory regulatory frameworks
