Carondelet St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona — Southern Arizona's longest continually operating hospital, founded in 1880 — is recruiting a senior-level Surgical Technologist (Level IV, Full-Time Days) to serve as a subject matter expert and preceptor within its operating room. This is a high-autonomy scrub role spanning highly complex, multi-specialty cases at a recognized destination hospital for minimally invasive heart and vascular surgery, advanced stroke care, bariatric surgery, emergency care, and wound care. The Level IV designation carries formal leadership responsibilities including orienting new, float, and agency techs and contributing to departmental budget justification.

Practice Highlights

  • Full-time day-shift position with variable shift, weekend, and holiday rotation required
  • Call rotation participation required
  • Highly complex, multi-specialty OR case mix including cardiovascular, vascular, bariatric, stroke-related neurosurgical, emergency, and wound care procedures
  • Level IV tech serves as the recognized expert in at least one specialty area and functions as a resource across more than one specialty
  • Proficient scrubbing across more than three surgical specialties; expected to perform all specialty procedures independently
  • Formal preceptor role: responsible for orienting and training new staff, float techs, and agency techs to the OR; provides performance feedback to management
  • Participates in monitoring and maintaining departmental resources; responsible for monthly budget justification of supply expenses
  • Works within a secure OR environment with access to medication storage areas; handles and labels medications on the sterile field under direct supervision of licensed personnel per established policy
  • Home to the Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute — a regionally recognized destination for minimally invasive heart and vascular surgery
  • Additional service lines include advanced stroke care, emergency care, bariatric surgery, and wound care
  • Reports to the Clinical Manager; routine collaboration with OR nursing staff, surgeons, and hospital-wide departments

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Demonstrated proficiency scrubbing more than three surgical specialties
  • Advanced knowledge of aseptic principles, anatomy and physiology, sterilization methods, and intraoperative instrumentation
  • Strong interpersonal, team-building, problem-solving, critical thinking, coaching, and mentoring skills required
  • Ability to perform all physical duties including patient lifting and transferring using proper body mechanics
  • Preferred: completion of a Surgical Technologist program from an accredited institution
  • Preferred: prior hospital or healthcare environment experience
