Practice Highlights
- Performs full patient registration at date of service, including demographic data collection, insurance verification, and creation of patient information packets and folders
- Covers at least two Patient Access service areas, with required competency in the Emergency Department
- Executes medical necessity checks and verifications in accordance with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) standards
- Obtains insurance authorizations for both scheduled and unscheduled hospital services; secures inpatient visit notifications to payors
- Collects and reconciles patient financial liabilities using compliant negotiation techniques before, during, and after date of service; performs hospital cash reconciliation and secured payment entry
- Secures and explains all required legal and regulatory forms: Advance Directives, Conditions of Service, Consent for Treatment, Important Message from Medicare, and EMTALA documentation
- Scans and manages Protected Health Information (PHI) in compliance with applicable standards
- Assists with scheduling diagnostic procedures, including entering data into scheduling systems and providing appointment instructions to patients
- Coordinates post-discharge care scheduling and follow-up as needed
- Operates within a hospital administration environment with potential exposure to high patient volumes and acute care settings
- Builds collaborative relationships with internal departments and external clients to drive communication accuracy and productivity
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; some college coursework preferred
- 0–1 year of customer service experience; 0–1 year of administrative experience in a medical facility, health insurance, or related field preferred
- Minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute
- Demonstrated proficiency with PC, CRT terminal, and printer operation
- Ability to interpret physician orders, medical terminology, and insurance cards accurately
- Understanding of Third Party Payor requirements and healthcare compliance standards preferred
- Knowledge of hospital department functions and inter-departmental relationships preferred
- Must be available to work hours and days as required based on departmental and system demands
- Physical requirements include extended periods of sitting at a computer terminal, frequent standing and walking, occasional lifting up to 25 lbs, and occasional wheelchair assistance for patients
