Practice Highlights
- Fixed night shift schedule: Sunday through Wednesday, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. — a predictable four-day block with three consecutive days off
- Cross-trained across a minimum of two Patient Access service areas, with mandatory competency in the Emergency Department
- Full-cycle patient registration duties: greeting, demographic data collection, consent and legal form execution (Advance Directives, Conditions of Service, Consent for Treatment, Important Message from Medicare, EMTALA), and PHI scanning
- Insurance verification, benefits and eligibility confirmation, prior authorization for both scheduled and unscheduled hospital services, and inpatient visit notification to payors
- Medical necessity checks and verification in accordance with CMS requirements
- Patient liability education and compliant point-of-service, pre-service, and post-service collections using proper negotiation techniques; hospital cash reconciliation and secured payment entry
- Scheduling support for diagnostic procedures: data entry into scheduling systems, patient appointment instruction, and coordination of post-discharge care
- Interpretation of physician orders, medical terminology, and insurance cards in accordance with established standards of care
- Collaborative interface with internal clinical teams and external clients (physician offices, payors) to ensure accuracy and productivity
- Hospital administration environment with potential exposure to patient care areas, including life-threatening patient conditions
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; some college coursework preferred
- 0–1 year of customer service experience required
- 0–1 year of administrative experience in a medical facility, health insurance environment, or related field preferred
- Minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute
- Demonstrated proficiency with PC, CRT terminal, and printer operation
- Working knowledge of third-party payor requirements and healthcare compliance standards preferred
- Ability to interpret physician orders, medical terminology, and insurance documentation
- Availability to work hours and days as needed based on departmental and system demands
- Ability to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods; occasional lifting up to 25 lbs; frequent standing, sitting, and walking; occasional wheelchair assistance for patients with mobility limitations
