Practice Highlights

  • Full-cycle patient access responsibilities spanning scheduling, pre-admission, admission, registration, reception, and discharge
  • Required proficiency in at least two Patient Access service areas, including the Emergency Department
  • Completes patient registration at date of service, including execution and securing of all required legal and compliance forms: Advance Directives, Conditions of Service, Consent for Treatment, Important Message from Medicare, and EMTALA documentation
  • Performs insurance verification, benefits and eligibility checks, and obtains authorizations for both scheduled and unscheduled hospital services — including inpatient visit notification to payors
  • Conducts medical necessity checks and verifications in accordance with CMS standards
  • Manages hospital cash reconciliation and secured payment entry in adherence to financial and cash control policies
  • Educates patients on financial liabilities and employs compliant patient liability collection techniques before, during, and after the date of service using proper negotiation techniques
  • Assists with scheduling diagnostic procedures, entering data into scheduling systems, and providing appointment instructions to patients
  • Supports post-discharge care coordination as needed
  • Scans and manages Protected Health Information; creates and maintains patient information packets and folders for upcoming services
  • Interprets physician orders, medical terminology, and insurance cards in accordance with established standards of care
  • Builds collaborative relationships with internal departments and external clients to drive communication accuracy and productivity
  • Works within a hospital administration environment with potential exposure to patient care areas, including life-threatening patient conditions

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; some college coursework preferred
  • 0–1 year of experience in a customer service role; 0–1 year of administrative experience in a medical facility, health insurance, or related field preferred
  • Minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of PC, CRT terminal, and printer operation
  • Understanding of Third Party Payor requirements and compliance standards preferred
  • Knowledge of hospital department functions and interdepartmental relationships preferred
  • Ability to interpret physician orders, medical terminology, and insurance documentation
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment and manage uncooperative or distressed patients professionally
  • Must be available to work hours and days as required by departmental and system demands
  • Must meet vaccination and screening requirements prior to start of employment, including COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations as applicable and permitted by law
