Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, California is seeking a full-time Monitor Technician (Health Unit Coordinator II) to join its inpatient nursing team. This role sits at the intersection of cardiac telemetry monitoring and unit coordination — a dual-function position that keeps a fast-paced nursing unit running safely and efficiently. Practice Highlights

  • Continuous cardiac telemetry monitoring across the nursing unit — interpreting rhythms in real time and notifying licensed caregivers of dysrhythmias as they occur
  • Responsible for maintaining full alarm integrity at all times, including appropriate parameter settings on all monitored patients
  • Accurate documentation of EKG rhythm strips with patient room number, name, date, and time; active role during Code Blue events obtaining and documenting strips
  • Order entry and management within the Cerner EMR system, including STAT order notification, allergy documentation, and downtime hard-copy procedures
  • Full unit coordination duties: patient record assembly within 30 minutes of transfer, chart maintenance, discharge chart integrity, and medical records management
  • Serves as the communication hub for the unit — answering calls within four rings, directing visitors and family members, assisting physicians and staff in locating patients and charts
  • Inventory management: checks pre-established unit supply levels and places orders as needed
  • Participates in unit quality improvement activities and attends or reviews 100% of staff meeting minutes
  • Provides end-of-shift report on pending issues to oncoming HUC or appropriate staff
  • Part of a regional network spanning Desert Regional Medical Center (Palm Springs), JFK Memorial Hospital (Indio), and Hi-Desert Medical Center (Joshua Tree)

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Must successfully pass an EKG competency test within the first 30 days of hire; annual cardiac rhythm interpretation competency required thereafter
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms accurately
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize independently in a high-interruption, fast-paced environment
  • Effective written and oral communication skills; must write legibly and respond calmly under stress
  • Preferred: Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) certification; American Heart Association BLS certification; prior unit secretary training or healthcare experience
