Practice Highlights
- Hospital-based patient access role covering multiple service areas, with required competency in at least two Patient Access areas including the Emergency Department
- Full-cycle registration responsibilities: patient greeting, demographic collection, pre-admission and admission processing, scheduling, and discharge functions
- Insurance verification, benefits and eligibility confirmation, and authorization procurement for both scheduled and unscheduled hospital services
- Medical necessity checks and verification in accordance with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) standards
- Patient liability education and compliant point-of-service, pre-service, and post-service collections using professional negotiation techniques
- Hospital cash reconciliation and secured payment entry adhering to financial and cash control policies
- Scanning and management of Protected Health Information (PHI); creation and filing of patient information packets for upcoming services
- Coordination of post-discharge care scheduling as needed
- Inpatient visit notification to payors and completion of all required legal forms (Advance Directives, Conditions of Service, Consent for Treatment, Important Message from Medicare, EMTALA)
- High-volume, fast-paced environment with exposure to the full spectrum of hospital patient acuity, including life-threatening conditions
- Collaborative cross-functional relationships with clinical staff, physician offices, and external payer contacts
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; some college coursework preferred
- 0–1 year of customer service experience; 0–1 year of administrative experience in a medical facility, health insurance, or related field preferred
- Minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute
- Proficiency with PC, CRT terminal, and printer operation
- Ability to interpret physician orders, medical terminology, and insurance cards accurately
- Working knowledge of third-party payer requirements and healthcare compliance standards preferred
- Competency required in at least two Patient Access service areas, including the Emergency Department
- Ability to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods; occasional lifting up to 25 lbs; occasional wheelchair assistance for patients with mobility needs
